My Journey as an Educator and Coach
Hello, my name is Xavier Ellsworth. I am a passionate and dedicated educator originally from Washington, DC. From a young age, I knew I wanted to work with children, though I wasn’t always certain in what capacity. I explored various paths — including volunteering as an EMT — but ultimately discovered my calling in the classroom during a transformative year of service with City Year, supporting students in a Southeast DC public school. That experience solidified my commitment to education and sparked a deep passion for creating equitable, student-centered learning environments.
Following that pivotal year, I earned an associate degree in Early Childhood Education from Dean College, then transferred to Manhattanville University, where I double majored in Elementary Education and Creative Writing while competing on the track and field team.
Since graduating in 2020, I’ve served as a third grade teacher at Icahn Charter School 6 in the Bronx. I have a deep passion for working in inner-city schools, where I strive to create inclusive, empowering learning spaces that reflect the strengths and needs of each student. In addition to my classroom responsibilities, I’ve led a basketball club, worked in the Saturday Academy program to provide students with extra academic support, and offered after-school tutoring to strengthen learning beyond the school day. I also enjoy coaching basketball on weekends for other school communities, using sports as a way to build relationships, confidence, and character.
I believe strongly that sports and education go hand in hand, as both provide powerful lessons in discipline, resilience, teamwork, and leadership.
My connection to youth development extends beyond the classroom. I started working at Home Run Baseball Camp during high school as a counselor-in-training, then progressed to a counselor role, where I had the opportunity to run several clinics in Southeast DC. In the summer of 2024, I returned as the camp director, bringing years of experience and a deep understanding of the camp's impact on the community.
Currently, I’m pursuing a master’s degree in Building Leadership and District Leadership at Manhattanville University, preparing to expand my impact at the school and district levels.
I now reside in White Plains, NY, with my wife, and we are joyfully expecting our first child. My work is grounded in a philosophy that prioritizes equity, creativity, and authentic community engagement. I am committed to helping all students succeed — both inside and outside the classroom.
